Carambola - Department of Welfare Menu Changes

Parents please note that the Department of Welfare has directed that Nutrition Standards for School Meals, as presented by Healthy Ireland be in place by the first day back to school in September 2018.

The Lunch Menu

One of the main changes is that they have directed all providers and schools that ham is made available only once a week.

Carambola’s ‘ham day’ will be Wednesday; ham will no longer be available on any other day. Children who previously had chosen ham on other days will now receive a cheese* sandwich until a parent or guardian logs on and make menu changes.
*unless we are aware of an allergy to dairy, whereupon we will provide an alternative.

In line with the changes, Carambola has also been sourcing and testing new products and are delighted to announce the following additions/replacements and nutritional enhancements.

  • Two new salad options in our alternative section, a rice salad and a potato salad.
  • A new chicken salad wrap.
  • All breads are half & half or wholemeal.

Breakfast Club/Snack Club Menu

For those schools in receipt of 2 extra items the Department of Welfare has directed that one item MUST be wholegrain and one item MUST be fruit or dairy.

Therefore biscuits, Jam, chocolate and yoghurt covered rice cakes are no longer available.

To make compliance under this selection simpler we are now combining the selection for children.
There are multiple choices but each combination, to be compliant, will consist one wholegrain with one dairy or fruit item.

Our new Department-approved menu is available now online; if you would like a hardcopy please email the office at info@carambola.ie.
